A national retailer, Australia's largest airport and a publicly-listed financial group have all signed on as inaugural sponsors of the GWS National Women's League entry.

Electronics and homewares retail giant Harvey Norman, publicly-listed financial firm FlexiGroup and the Sydney Airport Corporation will feature on the team's guernsey-front, back and shorts respectively.

Alongside support of the Giants' NWL team, Sydney Airport and FlexiGroup will also sponsor the club's GIANTS Care community program.

GWS will be one of eight AFL sides to enter a team into the AFL's new National Women's League. Some clubs have held back from inking deals until broadcast details are confirmed, with wider exposure likely to drive up the value of sponsorship.

Giants chief executive, David Matthews, called the trio of partnerships "historic", and said the agreements would give GWS the "opportunity to invest heavily in women's football and developing the next generation of female players."

While at least three teams – Collingwood (Holden), Carlton (Visy and Hyundai) and Adelaide (Thomas Foods International) – have upsold sponsors to the NWL, GWS is the first to bring multiple new partners on-board for the competition.

Both Harvey Norman and Sydney Airport have strong track records in women's sport – Harvey Norman last year became the major backer of the first-ever all-female entry into Bathurst 1000, and is the naming rights sponsor of Touch Football Australia's national women's team.

The retailer is also an existing sponsor of GWS's multicultural initiatives. It sponsors the first-ever Muslim grassroots women's team, the Auburn Giants, and chief executive Katie Page has been a prominent advocate of women's sport.

Sydney Airport, meanwhile, was recently unveiled as the Australian Rugby Union's first female-specific sponsor, exclusively supporting the code's female initiatives.
