Santos pumps up Port Adelaide backing, takes GFG asset

Santos has replaced GFG Alliance as a Port Adelaide Co-major Partner and its logo, appeared on the players’ guernsey for last weekend’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

The oil and gas giant’s new deal with the AFL club sees its branding on the kit for the first time.

Santos is a Major Partner of the club’s AFLW team and backer of the Aboriginal Power Cup since 2008.

GFG Alliance exited its arrangement earlier this year when its Australian business collapsed.

At the time, Port chairman, David Koch said he didn’t expect the deal to last for legal reasons and confirmed the club was seeking another Co-major Partner to join fast-food brand, KFC.

Port has previously struggled to fill this sponsorship asset, playing the 2018 season with only one Co-major. None-the-less, the club recently reported an operating profit of $3.157 million the last financial year.

Port CEO, Matthew Richardson said Santos’ upgraded deal reflects the strength of the relationship, which includes support for the club’s Power Community Limited.

Santos CEO, Kevin Gallagher said the expanded agreement was a logical next step.

“In 2022 we extended our support to Port Adelaide’s AFLW team and I’m really looking forward to seeing [our] logo on the men’s guernsey.

“The Santos Aboriginal Power Cup is the longest running joint education and AFL community program for Indigenous students in the Australian professional sports industry,” he added.

Port Adelaide’s Major Partner, MG Motor Australia recently renewed for three years making it the biggest commercial agreement in the club’s history.
