The decision by the AFL and NRL to continue their 2020 seasons, despite being behind closed doors, still provides options for brands to create content and engage consumers, according to Nick Biggin, director and CEO at Greenroom Digital.

As stadium lockouts force fans to stay at home, they will increasingly be turning to online streaming and traditional broadcasts to watch their teams play.

This provides an invaluable opportunity for everyone to “look at things differently” and find “new channels to get their content out there,” Biggin’s told Sponsorship News.

“It’s great to see that a lot of people are looking at different ways to distribute content and different ways they can use the assets that they have.”

“Brands are looking at different digital channels they can use to get their content out there and engage with those audiences to hopefully stay active during this time.”

The AFL’s traditional season-opener between Richmond and Carlton pulled in 1.23m viewers across both the Foxtel and Seven networks in 2019 and with crowds banned from attending live matches this year, that number is expected to be substantially higher.

Fans were allowed into the NRL’s round one matches last week, but round two will be played in empty stadiums.

The NRL’s round one match between the Eel’s and Bulldogs drew 633,000 viewers across Nine and Fox League.

With large crowds banned from pubs and restaurants until further notice, members and fans will be at home looking to engage with each other and their teams.
