The PGA of Australia and Golf Australia have merged their commercial operations to create operational efficiencies.

As part of the restructure, Michael McDonald, formerly PGA’s commercial director, has been appointed chief commercial officer of the merged team and will oversee partnerships, broadcast operations, and major events including the Australian PGA Championship and the ISPS HANDA Australian Open.

The move follows the implementation of the 2021 Australian Golf Strategy, which has seen the sport’s participation numbers reach 3.5 million adults and continued growth in professional golf.

The peak bodies have been situated together at the Australian Golf Centre in Cheltenham, Victoria since 2022.

Commercial successes since then have included deals with BMW, adidas, Challenger, Callaway, New Era, Southern Comfort and Taylormade.

PGA of Australia CEO, Gavin Kirkman praised McDonald's leadership and said, "Michael has demonstrated the ability to lead a team who has significantly grown the commercial programs of the PGA and Australian Golf during his tenure."

Golf Australia CEO, James Sutherland highlighted the strategic importance of the merger.

"It demonstrates our commitment to partner with the PGA and leverage growth opportunities for our sport.

"To achieve our potential as a sport – and to maintain interest and participation – our industry must seek out more opportunities to collaborate and work together."

The merger includes the creation of a new head of growth role to be filled by Jeremy Francis. He will be responsible for developing commercial value, audience expansion and digital initiatives.

Major events covered by the joint commercial structure will be overseen by Antonia Beggs, who joined earlier this year.
